Just Playing Around!

, , , ,

Good evening beauties! I tried out a new fall eye look, and I love how it turned out! SOOO I thought I would share it with you 🙂

Products used:

1. Apply Maybelline’s Color Tattoo in “Bad to the Bronze” all over the lid, along the lower lash line, and slightly above the crease. Lightly buff the edges with a clean blending brush.

2. Pat and blend MAC’s Antiqued eyeshadow all over the lid, above the crease, and along the lower lash line on top of the color tattoo.

3. Lightly blend the darkest shade in Maybelline’s Eye Studio quad in “Legendary Lilac” into the crease, and lightly blend a little along the outer 1/3 of the lower lash line.

4. Darken the outer corner of the eye with a deep, dark plummy, burgundy shade (I mixed the two darker purple colors in Wet n Wild’s Petal Pusher palette).

5. If the Antiqued eyeshadow has lost any intensity, lightly pat a bit more onto the center of the lid.

6. Line the lower water line with a purple/plum eyeliner pencil, and lightly highlight your inner corner.

7. Curl your lashes, apply mascara, and add falsies for a more dramatic effect.

I’ll do an entire Face of the Day with this eye look this weekend, so until then if you have any questions please feel free to comment, tweet me (@eyesmadeup), Or hit me up on Instagram (@eyesmadeup)! Sweet dreams!

Haul Time! September 2013

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Hello beauties! I apologize for taking so long to get this haul up, but in my defense I DID already write it once… but something happened with the website and I lost my entire post.  So here I am… AGAIN… trying to get this up for you 🙂  It’s all good though, because I’m so excited about the things I’ve picked up over the last several weeks, and I can’t wait to share them with you. There is a slight mix of drugstore with higher end products, and there are QUITE A FEW things here, SO let’s hop to it shall we?

First up we have eye products. I’ve been trying to find a dupe to MAC’s Antiqued eyeshadow for a bit now, and I picked up this quad from the Maybelline’s Eyestudio line in “Give Me Gold” thinking maybe the coppery shade would fit the bill. I’m thinking it may be a bit orange now that I have it, but it’s still a gorgeous color for fall.  Then as you can see underneath the quad, I’ve acquired quite a few mascaras. I’ve got the waterproof Rocket Volum’ Mascara from Maybelline, the waterproof Lash Love Mascara by Mary Kay, and a sample of Lancome’s Definicils mascara in the regular formula. Normally I need waterproof formulas to help with smudging, but I’m excited to see if the Lancome mascara lengthens my lashes at all. If you’d like to see how I use the Mary Kay mascara and how I keep it totally smudge proof, simply click here to see my post on it.

All right guys… if you saw my last post you’ll know I’m completely in love with the new Revolution Lipsticks by Urban Decay. AND if you’ve followed my last couple of posts you know I started out with buying three when I went with my boyfriend to visit his mom in Oregon, and I got the shades F-Bomb, Anarchy, and Naked. I loved them so much I eventually picked up Jilted and Shame. I know – the picture above only has four lipsticks in it, but I just had a blonde moment and forgot to grab Shame to stick it in the photo. Sorry about that, but if you’d like to see a review and swatches of these lipsticks, just click here. ALSO, I picked up a 24/7 lip liner in Naked by Urban Decay. This for me is the perfect match to my lip color so I can wear it with anything, and I love the new formula!

Now on to face products. Holy moly guys, I think I may have some new holy grail items in my stash.  First product shown on the left is the it Cosmetics Hello Light pressed highlighter. Holy crap. I LOVE this highlighter. This just may be the most natural looking, GORGEOUS highlighter I’ve ever used. Let me know if you’d like a review and/or demo, because I’d love to share this further. Take home message: I LOVE IT.

Next over we have the Estee Lauder Double Wear Flawless Concealer in Medium Light. This stuff works amazingly under the eyes and on blemishes, and it lasts so incredibly long. When I got just the TINIEST bit darker I needed to pick up a different shade SO… there it is 🙂 And it works wonderfully with my new Lancome Photogenic Lumessence foundation in the shade Bisque 2C (I’m currently an NC 25 in MAC for reference). I had never heard of this foundation until a Nordstrom sales associate recommended it for my sometimes slightly drier skin. So far I’m loving it!

And last but not lease for face products we have something I picked up totally on a whim, which I almost NEVER do… I don’t like to waste money when buying more expensive products so I always research the crap out of them first, but I’m so glad I decided to pick up Mally’s Perfect Prep Poreless Primer. If you’d like to hear more about it I’ll do a separate post, but take away message for this primer is: it is the BOMB.COM. (I just wish it wasn’t in a jar.)

All right so I got new face, lip, and eye products… I’ve got to balance those out with a new perfume right? Or maybe PERFUMES? First I picked up the new fall scent called Amber Blush from Bath and Body Works.  This is slightly sweet with definite notes of raspberry. THEN I bought my Lancome foundation from Macy’s, the store had a gift with purchase promotion which included a sample of their newest perfume, La Vie Est Belle. It has a sweet smell to it, but it’s not overpoweringly sickening sweet. To me it’s much more sophisticated. Well, when I tried this scent on for the first time and my boyfriend smelled it, he had QUITE the strong reaction. And by that I mean it was a really GOOD reaction. I figured if this stuff got that kind of response out of him, I had to pick it up.  The lotion also came as part of the gift with purchase, so now I’m covered!

Lastly, I picked up Philosophy’s When Hope is Not Enough facial serum. This is another item that was recommended to me by a Nordstom sales associate, and he thought this would be good for slightly agitated, flaky skin (which I had at the time because of Retin-A). While I do think it does lightly moisturize the skin and it helps soothe it, it has a very unpleasant smell and I’m already half way through the bottle, which seems quick to me. If you have had any experience with this serum please let me know if you also felt like it went fast, and what you think it smells like. I can’t put my finger on it, I just know it’s not the most pleasant smell in the world.

Well guys that’s it for this haul! If you have ever used any of these products or have any questions I’d love to hear from you to see what you think!  Also, let me know if you have any requests for reviews! If you’re not the blog-commenting-type you can always hit me up on Twitter or Instagram – I’d love to hear from you! (my username is eyesmadeup on both sites).

Thank you so much for reading, and I’ll see you next time!

New Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick Review!

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Good evening beauties!  Here is the review of Urban Decay’s new Revolution Lipstick I promised yesterday!  I know it’s a tad late in the day, but better late than never right?

Let me just start out by saying that I absolutely LOVE these. I seriously LOVE them. The last time I got this excited over a new lipstick was probably when Maybelline came out with their Color Vivids (see my review of those here).  And I HAD to be excited about these to shell out $22 a pop!

Well, let’s start with the review. I love the packaging of these lipsticks – I have never owned any of UD’s prior lipsticks, but from what I’ve seen these are a lot less bulky.  I think the tubes look really sleek and they feel pretty heavy duty, so I’m not afraid that the lids are going to pop off in my purse.  I give packaging a 5/5.

My Shades

The first colors I picked up were Naked, F-Bomb, and Anarchy. I chose Naked over Naked 2 because Naked 2 is a lot more beige, and beige-y nudes tend to not look as good on my NC 25-30ish skin tone (they make me look quite dead actually). I wanted a “your lips but better” shade, and plain ol’ Naked (which is more of a pink nude) fit the bill nicely. F-Bomb struck me by what a gorgeous, classic red it is, and Anarchy just looked like hot pink FUN to me.

However, I couldn’t stop with having only three. I fell so in love with this formula I picked up Jilted while out with a girlfriend, and after a somewhat stressful week I picked up Shame as a slight pick-me-up.

Left to right: Naked, F-Bomb, Anarchy, Jilted, and Shame

Let’s talk about the formulas of these bad boys, and what the company claims they’ll do.  According to Urban Decay’s website, these lipsticks are supposed to be creamy, long lasting, nourishing, and hydrating.  The company refers to them as “Creamy Badass Luxury.”  So what’s my take on all of that?

While I wouldn’t necessarily say that these lipsticks are super hydrating or nourishing, they are certainly not drying as most long wearing lipsticks I’ve tried are. None of the ones I’ve swatched have been very glossy at all, but they aren’t particularly matte either.  They just have a very nice, subtle sheen to them, and they look gorgeous on the lips.

Also, they go on incredibly pigmented (the swatches below were made with only 1-2 swipes!), they don’t dry out my lips, they don’t accentuate any lines in my lips either, and they really do last a long time. I had swatches of Shame and Venom on my hand from earlier in the day yesterday, and I STILL had a good amount of color left after doing dishes, washing my face, AND rubbing over the swatches with soap and water. The swatches could still be seen on my hand this morning!

Overall, as far as staying true to the company’s claims I give these a 4/5, but I really do love the formula, so I give the quality of the formula a 5/5.  I absolutely have no regrets about spending $22 on each of these lipsticks, and I actually DO feel like a badass when I have them on 🙂 I seriously cannot wait to build up my collection of these.

Color Selection

There are 22 shades available in this line. Twenty of these are available at stores like Ulta and Sephora, while the full range is available on Urban Decay’s website. While I’m sure maybe a few of these shades can be duped, there are also a lot of really unique shades like I’ve never seen before, and there a lot of variations within a shade family, so it seems there is something to suit every skin tone.

For instance, there are three to choose from in the FUCHSIA family: Anarchy is just a “BAM-in-your-face” bright fuchsia, Jilted is a deeper fuchsia with more blue in it, and Catfight is a more pink fuchsia with red undertones.  There are also many different pinks, reds, and nudes to choose from.

My absolute favorite would have to be Jilted: if you look at the above photo, you’ll see that it’s a pretty (slightly shimmery) deep fuchsia, but at certain angles it has a blue shift to it. It makes my teeth look whiter, and I love how it compliments my skin tone. And while Shame looks a bit scary dark in the tube, when swatched it’s simply a beautiful, deep berry color that can be toned down a bit by blotting. These two will be staples in my fall makeup looks, I can guarantee that.

When it comes down to it, I’m impressed with the shade selection, so I give the color range a 5/5.

Final Thoughts

I can’t say it enough – I truly, 100% love these lipsticks. They are a total 5/5 for me. I want more, I want them ALL, even though they aren’t the cheapest. The quality is excellent, and I think Urban Decay did an amazing job.

I know I only have 5 of the shades, but I found a wonderful blog that has swatches of all of the shades if you are interested, simply click here.

I’m interested to know what YOUR favorite shades are! So, please leave it (or them!) in a comment, and if you have any questions please leave those as well 🙂 OR if you’re not a commenting-on-blogs kind of person, I’d love to hear from you on my twitter or on Instagram! My username for both sites is “eyesmadeup”.

Thank you so much for reading! I hope you’re having a fabulous day, and I’ll see you again soon with a haul!

I’m Still Alive! Updates

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Good evening beauties! It has been almost two months on the dot since I last posted anything to this blog, and I sincerely apologize for that! These last two months have honestly been just very busy, and a bit…. well…. stressful, at times.  I know I know… that’s no excuse. BUT I’m back and happy to be writing again 🙂 I will have a new review up tomorrow, but for tonight I figured I’d give you some insight to what I’ve been up to over the past few weeks and show you a few beauty items I’ve picked up.

Recently, I spent five days in Oregon, near the Idaho border visiting my boyfriend’s mother. Views in this little town were really breathtaking at times, but MAN was it far away from… well, EVERYTHING. LOL. At least farther away from civilization than I’M used to being. However, this enabled me to catch up on some reading that’s been looooong overdue.

Now, even though I have always been a city girl through and through, I think my boyfriend and his family have begun to rub off on me a bit. He’s managed to convince me to go camping in the middle of nowhere with NO access to running water or a toilet – and I actually ended  up having a good time! He’s also opened me up to fishing (as you see – I’m not totally into that one quite yet), and while on this trip I’ve also purchased my first pair of Fatbaby Saddle boots… on my own will!

Me with the first brown trout I've ever caught, all by myself. Granted we had to throw it back, but I was the only one to catch anything that day :)

Now, don’t think for a SECOND that just because I was in the country for a few days that I didn’t buy any makeup! We drove the hour plus into Boise, ID, where I paid Ulta a little visit, and I came out with three of the new Urban Decay Lipsticks in Naked, Anarchy, and FBomb (I have since also picked up Jilted and Venom). I walked around shopping for the rest of the day with these swatches on my hand, and folks in that area thought that was… well, interesting. However, I felt like such a badass in my newly found aviators, I didn’t care!

Now even before this little trip to the country, I had taken advantage of a GWP from Lancome, and I had a girls shopping day with some of my good friends from Chico State.  I’ll do a little haul for you all this weekend, and also review a few of the products 🙂

Thank you so much for stopping by, and until next time, have a wonderful day!

Colors of the Rainbow Tag!!

, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Good afternoon lovelies!  I’m sure many of you have seen this tag circulating around the YouTube community just like I have, and while I haven’t actually been TAGGED by anyone, I thought it would be an interesting way to show you some of my most favorite beauty products of the moment.

Basically the way this tag works is you take products you’ve been loving lately that fall into each color category.  Pretty simple! Now let’s jump into it shall we? 🙂

20130714-160316.jpgMy first favorite red product is my Tarte Amazonian Clay blush in Natural Beauty. This blush can go on very pigmented so it’s important to use a light hand, but it gives such a beautiful, natural flush. Next we have my red eyelash curler from Sephora – it was a limited edition curler, and besides the fact that these are my favorite curlers, this one is so cute! I just love the color and the hearts on it. And lastly we have one of the new Maybelline Vivid lipsticks in On Fire Red. If you’re interested in a more in depth review of these lipsticks, you can find it here. Just know that I love them! 🙂

For this category I have only two products, but they are both fabulous! I always keep my Mary Kay hand cream close by (this one happens to be the peach scented one, but it’s also available unscented).  It is very moisturizing but not sticky, soaks in quickly, and lasts through a few hand washes so I don’t have to reapply it as often. The other product is another lipstick from the Maybelline Vivids line in the color Vibrant Mandarin. Once again – love these!

This is a category I thought I’d have trouble finding things for, but I came to find I have many favorite yellow products.  The first shows a whole line of makeup brushes that I absolutely love – Real Techniques Makeup Brushes. These particular brushes are face brushes, but I have an entire collection of these that I think are just amazing. They are synthetic brushes, and they’re so stinkin’ soft! My next yellow favorite is my body spray from Victoria’s Secret called Amber Romance. It smells like a sweet, light dessert, and it’s an instant mood lifter for me. And last but not least, is the Redken All Soft hair care line.  It makes my hair feel so soft and moisturized without weighing it down. I’ve just stocked up on these at Ulta because of their liter sale, so if you like any high end shampoos and/or conditioners you should totally check the store out before the sale ends! I got each of my liters for $15.99, and I also got two free pumps. Total SCORE 🙂

All righty… on to green. The first item pictured is my all time favorite face mask, which I actually use as my night time moisturizer – it’s the Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask.  I mentioned this mask in my last empties post, and I went and bought a new tube yesterday. This stuff smells like a jamba juice on your face, and my face feel so soft and hydrated in the morning. My second green favorite is another body spray – this one from Bath and Body Works called Sweet on Paris. This smells bottle of sugary goodness smells like cotton candy in a bottle, and it makes me happy wearing it. Unfortunately it is a limited edition scent, but it may be possible to find it other places online, such as ebay.

Okay… I hope you guys don’t mind that I’ve sort of combined these two color groups. We’ll just say these are my blue-ish favorites 🙂 As for the first one, we have my favorite highlighter I own – this is the Dior Rose Diamond powder.  Now, obviously the product itself isn’t blue, but the packaging is GORGEOUS. This powder gives such a subtle, natural looking sheen to my NC 20 skin, and it’s totally worth the hefty price tag in my opinion. Next up we have a product that’s fairly new on the market and considerably cheaper – Maybelline’s Rocket Volume Mascara (Waterproof). This formula creates the perfect base layer to layer other mascaras on top of, but by itself it’s also amazing. It gives pretty good volume and decent length, and I don’t have an issue with flaking with this product whatsoever. Lastly we have a leave in conditioner by Healthy Sexy Hair. I only use this very lightly on the ends of my hair after I’ve showered and my hair is still damp, but it just adds a bit of extra softness to my hair.

Aaaaaand on to purple! First up is my favorite makeup remover of all time – Clinique’s Take the Day Off Balm. This balm melts makeup off of my face beautifully, it doesn’t sting my eyes, and I prefer this consistency over a liquidy remover. Next up is a cream eyeshadow by Mary Kay called Violet Storm.  This eyeshadow makes a good base to use under other eyeshadow, but it also gives a pretty wash of color all by itself. Last we have just another example of my favorite line of makeup brushes – Real Techniques eye brushes.

Bonus Color!!! PINK!!

Let me just say – I KNOW PINK IS NOT IN THE RAINBOW.  I know this, I promise! However, every YouTube video I’ve seen of this tag adds in this bonus color, and how can I not include it?? It’s my favorite color 🙂

The first item is a blush I bought semi-recently from Sephora – Illamasqua’s powder blush in Katie.  This blush looks so natural and is so pigmented… it gives the most subtle flush to the cheeks, and I love the feel of this powder. This is another item I’d say is totally worth it’s $26 price tag.  The next product is one I’ve used for nearly 10 years – the Microdermabrasion scrub from Mary Kay.  This stuff makes my face feel so soft after using it, it helps my other serums and products sink into my skin better, and it helps prevent my pores from getting clogged up.

And last but certainly not least is my FAVORITE new fitness accessory – my Polar FT4 heart rate monitor. First of all –  isn’t it just adorable?? I just love the color scheme. Also, the chest strap that comes with it is extremely comfortable and fits my big rib cage very nicely. It’s super simple to use, and what else can I say…. I’m just so happy with this monitor!

So those are some of my recent favorites – I hope you enjoyed reading this tag post as much as I enjoyed writing it 🙂 If you would like a more in-depth review of any of the products or have any questions please let me know!

Thank you so much for stopping by and reading, and I hope you are having a wonderful day! I’ll see you again very soon 🙂

July Empties! 2013

, , , , , , , , ,

Good evening lovelies!  Hope you all have been well!  Tonight I just wanted to quickly share some products that I’ve used up over the past month or so, and I wanted to give a quick, mini review of each product 🙂

I often enjoy reading these sorts of blogs and watching empties videos on YouTube, and I hope you’ll enjoy this post as well.  I’m not the type of person to completely use up a product if I don’t love it, so you’re getting a glimpse of some of my favorite products.

We’ll start with the Mary Kay items first, going left to right…

Oil Free Eye Makeup Remover – I don’t know how many of these things I’ve gone through since high school, but this is hands down my favorite eye makeup remover. It doesn’t burn my eyes, it kills lash mites that grow on our lashes, it effectively takes off the waterproof mascara I wear, and it doesn’t leave an oily residue. Many people think it looks like there’s oil in the bottle, but I promise there is not. (It’s actually a silicone based remover, and silicones tend to repel themselves from water.) While I’ve tried other drugstore and department store brands of remover, I still have always preferred this formula.

Vitamin C Serum – I showed one of these in my last empties post, so I won’t go into deep detail here. I have maybe a few uses of this particular bottle left, but I’ve already got its backup lined up and ready to go!

Day Solution SPF 35 (Pink Bottle on the Top Left) – This is the only sunscreen that I’m able to use on a daily basis that doesn’t break me out in deep, painful bumps.  It’s very light feeling on the skin, it doesn’t have a super sun-screeny odor to it, and it has a slight light reflecting quality to it. I dig it, so I’ll just KEEP ON usin’ it!

Night Solution (Clear Bottle on the Top Right) – I finally finished up using the little bit that was left from May. While I do like this product, I feel like the Vitamin C serum does more, and sometimes I’m too lazy to deal with another added step.

Now on to other stuff!

Tea Tree Cleanser by Lush – Holy guacamole…. I LOVE this stuff! I use it as my toner after cleansing for a few reasons. It gets any residual cleanser off my face that I may have missed, it has tea tree oil in it so it helps kill germs and bacteria on my skin, and I feel a light layer helps serum and acne treatments sink into my skin better. Love love love!

Murad’s Acne Cleanser – I love that this cleanser has salicylic acid in it, but it isn’t especially harsh. It doesn’t dry my skin out, and it gives my skin a cool, cold feeling after it is rinsed off.  It has time-released acne fighting ingredients in it, and I just… really like this cleanser. Granted I don’t use it every day, but probably every other day. I highly recommend this cleanser to anyone with acne prone skin 🙂

Vitamin C Serum by Image – This was given to me by my esthetician friend.  She does all of my facials and peels, and she’s introduced a few items in Image’s Vital C line to me that I really love. I think this was a newer product so she gave me a sample of it. It’s nice… smells like oranges, a little more so than the Mary Kay Vitamin C serum, it doesn’t feel too heavy, and it’s slightly moisturizing, but I didn’t have enough to notice it making any differences.

Redken’s All Soft Shampoo & Conditioner – A few months ago I went to my hair dresser, confused why my hair felt so course and brittle.  She told me my hair lacked moisture.  Now… I’d always been hesitant to use  any moisturizing shampoos in my hair, because I was afraid it would make my hair and scalp really oily.  However, she insisted that it wouldn’t be OVERLY moisturizing, just exactly what my hair would need. After she used it on my hair I was sold. It does exactly what she said it would do, and I’ve since gone out and bought liters of both items, and I’m considering going to Ulta to stock up on more considering their huge liter sale they have going on now. I love this stuff!

And finally, my absolute favorite item in the bunch….

Origins Drink Up Intensive Overnight Mask – This stuff is AH-MAZING! When I put it on it smells like I’m smearing a Jamba Juice smoothie all over my face, it’s incredibly moisturizing, it doesn’t clog up my acne prone skin, and… I just love it! I use it only at night as it’s too thick for use during the day under makeup, and I’m definitely going to run out to get more.

Well it is time for me to hit the hay… Man I’m so glad it’s Friday tomorrow!!! If you have any questions or would like a more in-depth review of any of the above products please leave them below, and let me know if you have any specific requests for future posts!

I hope you all have a fabulous weekend – please stay safe and drink plenty of water! Thanks so much for reading 🙂 Good night!

How to Keep Your Mascara from Smudging!

, , , , , , , , ,

In the past it never mattered what mascara I used – it would always smudge onto my eyelids (which are extremely hooded) and underneath the outer corner of my eyes.  I could use the most waterproof of waterproof formulas, but it wouldn’t matter… A few hours into the day my lashes would be smudge city. However, luckily I came across a YouTube video that has solved that problem!

One thing to keep in mind about waterproof mascara is that it is exactly that – WATER proof, not OIL proof. Your skin releases oil, and when it comes into contact with the mascara on your lashes the mascara begins to break down. Also, waterproof formulas just have more wax in them, which enables them to stand up to water and hold curl better. Unfortunately…. oil will get through these formulas as well.

What does one do to solve this problem, you may ask? The answer is very simple, and requires only a few products. Just keep in mind that:

What I used:

**Keep in mind that most are Mary Kay products, as I am a consultant, but many other brands also make similar products**

  1. Mascara –  preferably a waterproof version (my favorite is the Mary Kay Lash Love Waterproof formula).
  2. Translucent powder (I prefer the new loose translucent powder by Mary Kay)
  3. A small fluffy brush (I normally use the Sigma E40 blending blush)
  4. Makeup Finishing or Setting Spray (I use the new MK finishing spray, but Urban Decay and Skindinavia also make these sprays as well)

After I apply my mascara, I let it set for a few seconds. Then, I take my small fluffy brush with a bit of powder on it, tapping off any excess.

I VERY LIGHTLY sweep the brush over my lashes, on top and the bottom, and anywhere my lashes might come into contact with skin (eyelids, brow bone, underneath the lower lash line). It’s important to be very light handed with the powder, otherwise it’ll look like you have dusty eyelashes (NOT CUTE!!), and powdering the skin ensures that the oil will get soaked up before it can reach the lashes.

Seems weird I know, but now the mascara has been set with the powder! Step one to preventing smudging is complete. NOW, I close my eyes and lightly mist my powdered lashes with the makeup finishing spray.  I’ve now set the powder that has set my waterproof mascara! It’s la triple action plan to preventing smudging!

Here are the steps again, cliff note version:

  1. Apply mascara.
  2. Sweep fluffy brush with a little powder on it over your lashes and any skin your lashes come in contact with.
  3. Close your eyes and lightly mist your lashes with setting spray.

I hope this was helpful for you 🙂 Thank you so much for reading, and please let me know if you have any questions. I hope you have a wonderful day!

Trying a New Brand – Illamasqua!

, , , , , , , ,

I have been on the hunt for an amazing primer for drier skin, and I may have found it in Illamasqua 🙂 I picked up their new Hydrating Veil after seeing it in one of Pixiwoo’s YouTube videos, and I’d been dying to get my hands on Illamasqua’s Katie blush – and Sephora FINALLY got it back in stock! I nearly let it slip through my fingers again, but my boyfriend (who knew how bummed I’ve been that I couldn’t get my hands on it) convinced me I should pick it up. Isn’t he the best?! I’m so pleased with it thus far.

This is a look I did to recreate one of Robert Jones’ smokey eye tutorials for hooded lids: eyeshadow is mostly Mary Kay, and I’ve used the new primer and blush as well.

Anyway I shall let you know my full thoughts soon on both of these products! But so far…. LOVE! Hope you’re all having a great weekend!

Maybelline’s New Vivid Lipsticks – Review!

, , , , , , ,

Holy guacamole!  Never before have I been into super bright neon lipsticks, but I’ve recently tried out a few of the new Maybelline Vivid Lipsticks, and I am IN LOVE.

At first I bought only one, Vivid Rose, to sort of test the waters, but then the next day I had to go back and get three more. AND… I want to go back and get one of the orange shades now.

Of the ones I’ve purchased, this is what I’ve noticed, and I honestly haven’t found one bad thing I can say about them thus far:

  • They are pretty long wearing but not drying (they aren’t super moisturizing, but they definitely don’t dry my lips out).
  • They are incredibly pigmented – with the four I have, the color you see in the tube is how they look on the lips.
  • They glide on very smoothly.
  • The finish is not super glossy, but also definitely isn’t matte – lips just have a nice sheen.
  • The packaging seems sturdy, and it’s bright as well, so I can easily find it in my purse.
  • They are such good quality for the price! I bought mine at Target, and I paid around $5.50 each for them. (Keep in mind that price will vary by whatever area you live in)

Mary Kay Translucent Powder Review

, , , , , , , ,

Here it is! My new favorite finishing powder! And no – I’m not just saying this because I’m a consultant. I genuinely love this powder, and I’m here to show you why.

My Skin & Typical Makeup Regimen

Before I get into the review, I want to give you an idea of what my skin is like and the products I typically use.  I know not everyone’s skin is the same, and therefore it won’t react to every product like mine does. However, if you have skin similar to mine, this review will give you an idea of how the powder will probably perform for you.

I have pretty balanced skin, though it sometimes leans on the slightly more dry side, and I typically prefer to use a hydrating makeup primer before applying liquid foundation. Lately I’ve been using Tarte’s Illuminating Primer with Makeup Forever’s HD Foundation. Under my eyes I use an illuminating concealer of some sort, and then I’ll apply my bronzer, blush, and highlighter. My last step before spraying my face with a setting spray is applying this powder very lightly with a large powder brush (usually I use the Mary Kay powder brush or the Real Techniques blush brush).

This product is packaged in a clear plastic tub with a black, plastic, screw-on lid. The container seems pretty durable, and I think it looks classy sitting on a vanity with the pretty MK logo on top of the lid.

The one thing I LOVE about the packaging is that the sifter has a rotating/locking lid.  This means if you keep this in your makeup bag in your purse, and this container gets flipped upside down, not all of your powder is going to get stuck on top! I was a dork with mine unfortunately, and I forgot to shut the sifter… soooo most of my powder now sits on top of the sifter. But that was my fault, so I can’t blame the packaging for this one. It’s still completely usable, but I just have to be a tad more careful with it to make sure powder doesn’t fly everywhere.

This little tub contains 0.39 oz of product, and it costs $16 if bought at full retail cost.     That averages out to about $41/oz. I know this probably seems like a lot, but lets take a look at the Bare Minerals Mineral Veil.  This is the only other translucent, loose finishing powder I’ve used, and it’s basically supposed to do the same things as the Mary Kay powder (set makeup and blur any imperfections).

The Bare Minerals Mineral Veil comes in similar packaging, although as you can see from the picture it’s a bit smaller than the MK version. The BM Mineral Veil comes with 0.30 oz of product, and it costs $20 (that averages to nearly $67/oz).

Now, the ingredients of the two powders are very different, so perhaps this is why BM is more expensive… I don’t have really any idea. I just know that both powders work pretty similarly for me, and the Mary Kay powder gives me more for my money.

My Experience & Thoughts

While the powder looks white in the container, it doesn’t show up white at all on my skin. I make sure not to douse my face in powder and totally cake it on mind you, but I honestly can’t see the powder on my face once it’s applied. I’m an NC 20 shade-wise (meaning fair skin w/golden or yellow undertones), so I’m pretty light. I can’t vouch for how this looks on dark skin yet, but for ME, it’s definitely translucent.

The powder also feels very light on my skin, and when I rub it between my fingers it feels very soft and finely milled. I don’t really have oily skin so I can’t vouch for any oil absorbing properties, but I do know that this powder doesn’t seem to dry my skin out  which is a plus! My skin is very easily dried out by powders, and it’s why I’m unable to use really super mattifying powders like Rimmel’s Stay Matte. However, I can comfortably wear this powder all day without looking my skin looking cracked like a desert. It sets my makeup very nicely, and I do notice a slight blurring effect on my skin.

SOOOOO, so far this powder has delivered on its claims for me. I’m really enjoying it, I’ve used it every day I’ve worn liquid foundation. I haven’t been able to find any faults with it, but I haven’t used it personally on any other skin tones. Once I do that I want to supplement this review 🙂

I would definitely give it a try if you’ve been looking for a nice finishing powder. Remember that Mary Kay offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee, so it can always be returned if you don’t like it.

Please let me know what your experience with this powder have been like! I’m curious to know how people with other skin types/tones feel about this powder 🙂

Thank you so much for reading, and I hope you have a wonderful day!
